Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gripe Water?

Gripe Water is a time tested formula that has been used for over 100 years throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, India, and the Caribbean to remedy the discomforts of babies with colic, gas, teething and hiccups. Previously, Gripe Water was being imported to the States but it did not gain approval because many of the formulas had alcohol in them. Mommy's Bliss® introduced all-natural, alcohol-free Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water to the American market over 10 years ago.

What's in Gripe Water?

Our Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water has twice the amount of the effective Organic ingredients than other Gripe Waters. The fennel, ginger, and sodium bicarbonate have been known to be beneficial in easing nausea and discomfort due to baby stomach gas and other colic symptoms. Fennel and ginger are also effective for easing the discomforts of infant teething. Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water does NOT contain any of the following: Gluten, Starch, Dairy products, Wheat, Yeast, Dill, Chamomile, Alcohol, Parabens, Artificial colors, Artificial flavors, Binders, Sucrose (table sugar), Fillers, Petroleum-based products.

Why does Gripe Water contain Sodium Bicarbonate?

There are two main reasons why we include sodium bicarbonate in Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water. First, the sodium bicarbonate acts to balance and maintain the pH of the Gripe Water. Second, the sodium bicarbonate acts in conjunction with the ginger and fennel to facilitate and aid digestion. Its properties to reduce gastric irritations are well known by doctors and pharmacists.

Is the Sodium Bicarbonate safe to give my baby?

The sodium bicarbonate used in the Gripe Water was specifically formulated for infants and babies and the amount contained is minimal (14 mg or less than 1% of the daily recommended amount for infants). All ingredients in the Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water are listed on the FDA's Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list. Sodium bicarbonate is also included in the GRAS list as well as the FDA Inactive Ingredients Guide.

Is Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water FDA approved?

Because Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water is a dietary supplement and not a "Drug" it is not regulated by the FDA. The product is however manufactured in a FDA Certified lab and all ingredients are on the FDA's Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list.

Is Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water safe?

Our product is manufactured in experienced laboratories which follow strict manufacturing standards, guidelines, and procedures for quality and safety. All the ingredients used are listed on the FDA's Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list. The ingredients are carefully selected and must meet our quality assurance requirements prior to their use. After the product has been manufactured it is held until additional analytical and microbiology tests have been conducted to assure the safety of the product. Only when a "Certificate of Analysis" has been issued, is the product released for sale. Our product is also protected by a safety seal.

Can my baby be allergic to the ingredients?

Like any foods that are introduced for the first time to a baby there may be an allergic reaction such as hives, vomiting, diarrhea and irritability. If there is a history of food allergies in either parent, we recommend contacting your physician/pediatrician prior to giving Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water.

When should I give it?

Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water is given as needed and not as a preventative measure - After all, it works so fast! We suggest you wait until your baby is 2 weeks old and over 7 pounds to start administering Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water  to avoid early allergic reactions. For all other infants and children give Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water at the first signs of discomfort.

Should I give it as a preventative measure or just when needed?

It is only necessary to give it as needed when you recognize that your baby is starting to become uncomfortable as it generally works quickly.

How does it help with teething?

Babies cry a lot when teething and this may cause them to become gassy. However, it is believed that when babies are teething the salivary glands produce an enzyme which upsets the stomach, causing them to cry, and this is why Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water works so well for teething children.

How do I give it?

Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water may be administered orally by a dropper or directly in a bottle after feedings. Most babies will need it after feedings when they get gassy from eating too fast or gulping in air while feeding. It is a good idea to wait thirty minutes after a feeding to administer Gripe Water as it will help the food digest. If given too soon, the baby may vomit because he is too full or the ingredients don't mix well with the stomach contents. If a baby is not able to complete a feeding due to gas he or she may need it prior to the feeding. You will know what works best for your baby through giving it at different times.

The dosages are as follows:

2 weeks - 1 month of age1/2 tsp. (2.5 ml)
Infants - 1 to 6 months of age
1 tsp. (5 ml)
Children 6 months and older2 tsp. (10 ml)
Adults2 tbsp. (30 ml)

Adults can use Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water for gas, stomach upsets, nausea, and hangovers too!

Can I give half the dose and more often?

It is recommended that you follow the instructions on the bottle. You may find you need to give it more often as half the dose is not getting the best results for your baby.

Why can't we give it more than 6 times in 24 hours?

This is our recommendation as with any product that contains sodium bicarbonate it is not safe to give more than the recommended dose, especially for babies.

How long will it take before my baby feels better?

Mommy's Bliss® has been known to work in 5-20 minutes – no kidding!

Can I give it with mylicon drops or other drugs?

By combining Mommy's Bliss® with other products it is difficult to determine which one is providing relief for your baby. We suggest giving Mommy's Bliss® on its own to see what the results are. This way if your baby gets relief, then you can discontinue other medications. You may want to consult your pediatrician first as some babies need to remain on Zantac and do fairly well with both but first try Mommy's Bliss® on its own to determine the results.

Will it work for my baby?

In a recent survey 85% of parents said they would recommend Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water. You may want to check our feedback page on our website for more information from our customers. However, there are cases when the product didn't work for a baby and that may be because the baby was allergic to the ingredients, was uncomfortable for other reasons or the liquid was not administered as recommended.

Will my baby's bowel movements be easier to pass?

Some reports indicate that some babies have had less trouble with their bowel movements and were not as constipated as previously.

How long does it last?

Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water has a 2-year shelf life from the date of manufacture when stored at room temperature. We recommend discarding it four weeks after opening it due to reduced potency and an increase in the potential for bacteria.

Does it need to be refrigerated?

No! Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water contains natural preservatives and does not need refrigeration, like some other Gripe Waters. Giving you one less thing for you to worry about with your new baby!

Is there any reason I shouldn't give it to my baby?

We recommend that you delay giving Gripe Water to premature babies and those under 7 pounds, as a small baby may not be able to tolerate any Gripe Water at this time, unless prescribed by your pediatrician. In addition, if there is a history of food allergies in the family, we recommend you contact your pediatrician/physician prior to giving infants Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water. Do not administer the product if your baby experiences increased discomfort or changes that you are not familiar with after taking Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water i.e. baby becomes more irritable after taking a dose, or breaks out in hives or a rash. Contact your doctor if the baby experiences any of these things. Mommy's Bliss® Gripe Water should not be given if there is a history of kidney failure, heart disease or renal problems, as the product contains sodium bicarbonate. The amount of sodium bicarbonate is small and most likely will be harmless, but you must check with your doctor if either of the latter conditions exists.

Can I get a refund if it doesn't work for our baby?

If you purchased directly through our web site call us within thirty days of the order date, and we will send you a check for 100% of the purchase price, minus shipping cost. If you purchased from a retailer the return policy of the retailer you purchased from supersedes our policy. We recommend that you check the retailers return policy when you purchase the product.

How should liquid supplements be administered to infants/babies?

  • Always consult with your pediatrician before giving an infant liquid supplements and/or medications.
  • Have your pediatrician show you how to administer liquid medication.
  • Always use a calibrated dropper / dispenser.
  • Practice using the dropper with water prior to using on an infant.
  • Give the liquid slowly by aiming at the side of the mouth inside their cheek. AVOID SQUIRTING AND DO NOT AIM STRAIGHT BACK TOWARD THE THROAT (as it may choke or gag the infant).
  • Have the baby sitting upright and turn the head slightly to the side.
  • Give a small amount at a time, allowing time in-between to prevent gagging or choking. If the infant appears to be gagging, stop administering the liquid immediately.
  • In many cases, the infant may not immediately like the taste of the liquid and may initially reject the liquid. In these instances, it is best to stop and re-administer the liquid at another time when the baby is calm to allow the infant to gradually get used to the taste of the liquid.

What is the difference between choking and gagging?

  • Choking occurs when an infant can't breathe because the airway is blocked or they have inhaled liquids into the windpipe. If the airway is blocked for long enough, it can be fatal.
  • Gagging occurs when an object or liquid stimulates the gag reflex at the back of the throat, through direct or non-direct contact. Stimulating the gag reflex can also cause vomiting.

What are the symptoms of choking?

  • The baby cannot cry or make a sound
  • Weak cough
  • Soft high pitched sound while inhaling
  • Ribs and chest retract indicating difficulty in breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Loss of consciousness if the blockage is not cleared promptly

How can I be prepared for an emergency?

It is strongly encouraged that you take a CPR class; it could save your infant's life or another infant's life.

Talk to your pediatrician about any concerns you have with your child's health or administering medications/supplements etc.

Mommy's Bliss

Our family-run company was founded by our own mom, who raised three children while working as a registered nurse, lactation consultant and certified nurse midwife. Her dedication to family health inspires our promise: to promote natural health through all of life’s stages with products that are safe, effective, premium quality, sustainable and affordable... because all families deserve bliss...

Roshan Kaderali is a registered nurse, midwife, lactation specialist and CEO of Mommy’s Bliss®. Originally from Tanzania and later a resident of Scotland, she has lived permanently in America for over thirty-five years.

When she began her nursing practice in the U.S., she recommended Gripe Water for infant colic and fussiness, only to find that it was not available in America. Working with an FDA registered cGMP laboratory, she developed the first all-natural Gripe Water for the American market. The continuous stream of letters of appreciation received from both doctors and parents alike was both gratifying and inspiring. Today Mommy’s Bliss® Gripe Water is a best-selling product at pharmacies, baby stores, health food & drug stores across America. It is also widely available online. Her company has created many different products for mothers and babies, all of which are truly natural and aim to comfort the baby and mommy.
