Fluoride exposure is inevitable today, found in toothpaste to drinking water, antibiotics to non-stick pans. Fluoride has become a matter of increased public passion as more evidence of neurotoxicity springs from 'conspiracy theories' or maybe 'conspiracy facts' about its use in drinking water in Russian and Nazi concentration camps to chemically induce docility, calcification of the pineal gland, associated with sleep disorders and the onset of schizophrenia, to well-known IQ lowering properties. Many, escpecially in heavily fluoridated regions of the United States, have organized initiatives at the local and state level to remove this toxin from municipal drinking water.

A new study published in the Pharmacognosy Magazine titled, "Curcumin attenuates neurotoxicity induced by fluoride: An in vivo evidence," goes beyond the Petri dish in support of the suspicion that fluoride is indeed brain-damaging, additionally revealing that curcumin, naturally-derived, active ingredient from the spice turmeric, is a powerful, protective element against the numerous, health-damaging effects attributed to fluoride exposure.

The study, authored by researchers from the Department of Zoology, University College of Science, M.L. Sukhadia University, Udaipur, India, studied the severe neurodegenerative changes in brain particularly in the hippocampus and cerebral cortex caused by fluoride exposure.

The study begins by acknowledging fluoride as a toxin and its contribution to degenerative diseases through its exposure.

"Fluoride (F) is probably the first inorganic ion which drew attention of the scientific world for its toxic effects and now the F toxicity through drinking water is well-recognized as a global problem. Health effect reports on F exposure also include various cancers, adverse reproductive activities, cardiovascular, and neurological diseases."

Fluoride Dangers

The danger imposed by fluoride is reported in the study to be "at the cellular level in which two main processes, oxidative stress, and excitotoxicity act relentlessly to inflict the majority of cell damage and death"

The study continues to report, "One proposed strategy for the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders that has gained considerable attention is the use of natural antioxidant agents since one common advantage of all these compounds is their human safety. Curcumin (Cur) is an ancient Indian herb, which is extracted from the curry powder and has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The increase in level of glutathione by Cur indicates its antioxidant property"

The researchers draw the following conclusion:

"Our study thus demonstrate that daily single dose of 120 ppm F result in highly significant increases in the LPO as well as neurodegenerative changes in neuron cell bodies of selected hippocampal regions. Supplementation with curcumin significantly reduce the toxic effect of F to near normal level by augmenting the antioxidant defense through its scavenging property and provide an evidence of having therapeutic role against oxidative stress mediated neurodegeneration."

So what does this actually mean?

Ultimately, the researches found that the consumption of curcumin for 30 days significantly reduced the degenerative effects of fluoride on the brain cells and neurons in the region of the hippocampus. Furthermore, fluoride levels were reduced to near normal levels from curcumin's "antioxidant defense through its scavenging property."

How can you apply this study to your life?

Research found these promising and beneficial effects to occur when using a body weight equivalent of approximately 2,000 mg daily of curcumin for an adult weighing 150 lbs. Similarly, that would translate to roughly 2,700 mg for an adult weighing 200 lbs.

Most products don't deliver enough active curcumin to provide this effective dosage without having to ingest a handful of pills. Be aware that other products often advertise curcumin supplements, for example, as a 500 mg capsule at 40% standardized extract. Realize that this is merely 200 mg of curcumin.
