Futurebiotics® Saffron Extract is an all-natural extract derived from the red stigmas of Saffron (Crocus sativus) flowers. Saffron contains a variety of naturally-occurring active plant constituents, including safranal, picrocrocin and crocin. Research on Saffron Extract is focused on the plant's active constituents and potential health benefits.
Saffron is the world's most expensive spice. Native to southwest Asia, it was first cultivated in Greece and is now grown in many countries worldwide. It is also referred to as saffron crocus. Each Saffron flower contains three vivid crimson stigmas. When harvested and dried, the stigmas are used as a seasoning and coloring agent; and Saffron has a long history as part of traditional medicine.
Saffron contains more than 150 volatile and aroma-yielding compounds, along with many nonvolatile active components. The bitter glucoside picrocrocin is responsible for saffron's flavor. Safranal, a volatile oil, gives saffron much of its distinctive aroma. Futurebiotics® Saffron Extract contains 90 mg of pure Saffr'Activ® Saffron extract per capsule, standardized to a minimum of 0.3% safranal. In addition, it provides crocin and picrocrocin.
Futurebiotics® Saffron Extract is a 100% vegetarian supplement, provided in convenient, easy-to-swallow capsule dosage form. The product does not contain caffeine or other stimulants. Glass packaging extends natural freshness and helps maintain product potency.
The following are not claims. The potential benefits of Saffron (Crocus sativus) have been researched as found in biomedical studies such as these:
Radical scavenging activity and LC-MS metabolic profiling of petals, stamens, and flowers of Crocus sativus L.
Safranal, a saffron constituent, attenuates retinal degeneration in P23H rats.
(...dietary supplementation with safranal slows photoreceptor cell degeneration and ameliorates the loss of retinal function...in rats.)
Cardioprotective effect of saffron extract and safranal in isoproterenol-induced myocardial infarction in wistar rats.
Saffron Aqueous Extract Inhibits the Chemically-induced Gastric Cancer Progression in the Wistar Albino Rat.
